Advanced Empathy

Empathy is consistently shown to be a strong predictor of therapeutic outcome and is core to any effective therapeutic relationship. It is thus an essential part of clinical practice and most clinicians will have a strong sense of empathy and use this in their clinical practices. This Advanced Empathy training focuses on further developing therapist empathic attunement and resonance. It seeks to help clinicians to hone and maximise their existing empathy skills enabling them to get the most from this in their clinical practice and their therapeutic relationships.

Developed within the field of Emotion Focused Therapy, and drawing on a range of social neuroscience and emotion theory, this training covers core principles of empathy, embodied experience, deepening of emotion, and effective and efficient guiding of client experiencing. It aims to build and improve empathy skills including effective communication of empathy and empathic presence and how to support emotional deepening.

Using an experiential and interactive format you will engage in short teaching sessions, video examples, skills practise and small group exercises.

Advanced Skills training covers:

  • Using empathy to build the therapeutic relationship and establish core therapeutic presence
  • Moment-by-moment attunement and empathic resonance with clients as a guide to therapy
  • How to therapist and client embodied experience of emotion
  • Learning new therapeutic responding techniques to deepen emotional experience and processing (e.g. empathic conjectures, evocative reflections, empathic refocusing)
  • Advanced empathy skills to learn when to help clients regulate, contain, process and transform emotional pain
  • Skills for rapidly engaging clients

CPD workshops

We are pleased to offer in-house CPD workshops for clinical services. These can be particularly relevant for NHS services where Emotion Focused Therapy is recommended, but are of value across settings.

For example, Person-Centred Experiential Counselling for Depression (PCE CfD) is a National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) approved intervention recommended for the NHS Talking Therapies (formally IAPT) services. A core aspect of this approach is EFT, and EFT skills and tasks are reported by PCE-CfD clinicians to be especially beneficial in their work. PCE-CfD clinicians have told us that they would like ongoing support and training for their professional development to confidently and effectively use EFT tasks in their practice.

Responding to this, we delivered a series of successful and popular online workshops to services throughout 2023. One hundred per cent (100%) of attendees reported in their feedback that they would recommend the workshops to colleagues. We have now expanded the range on offer, carefully constructing content to support the continued development of skills and and competencies set out by the BACP in the National Curriculum for PCE-CfD training.

One-day CPD workshops are available on the following:

  • Working with the Inner Critic
  • Emotion Regulation & Containing
  • Unfinished Business for unresolved hurt
  • Focusing to make sense of unclear or distressing feelings
  • Additional bespoke workshops to meet the needs of individual services are also possible, on request

Who is training suitable for?

Suitable for services who are looking for CPD with direct and useful applications to therapeutic practice. Also useful for those who want to specifically deepen their EFT knowledge and competence such as those trained in PCE-CfD.

Training format

This training is delivered via online video platform from the Emotion Focused Therapy Institute England, at the Salomons Institute of Applied Psychology, Canterbury Christ Church University.

Training dates

Dates are by arrangement with each service and can be flexible to meet your needs. Please note, a limited number of CPD workshops can be offered each year, and early booking is recommended.

Emotion Focused Therapy accreditation involves a taught component and supervised practice. The Level 1 (core skills), level 2 (advanced skills) and advanced empathy are the required taught components for people seeking to be an accredited EFT therapist. Once you have completed the taught components, the level you are trained to depends on how much supervised practice you decide to complete, and whether you would like to submit tapes of your practice to be rated. The International Society for Emotion Focused Therapy sets out on its website the different levels and what is required to reach that level, all the way through to becoming a certified trainer. You can find it here.

Training is delivered online or in person. When training is in person, it runs out of the Emotion Focused Therapy Institute England, based at the Salomons Institute of Applied Psychology, Canterbury Christ Church University in central Tunbridge Wells.
