Core Skills training covers the following
Who is training suitable for?
Training is suitable for anybody working with eating disorders looking to add to their clinical practice, particularly if they are interested in finding new ways to work with emotion or people who get ‘stuck’. Due to the high prevalence of neurodivergence amongst people with eating disorders, this training also considers how some tasks from Emotion Focused Therapy or Schema Therapy may be adapted for neurodivergent clients. Training will also be relevant to people trained in Emotion Focused Therapy or Schema Therapy who are interested in finding out more about integrating these approaches in their clinical practice.
It should be noted that this training focuses on facilitating the SPEAKS emotion change process in therapy and doesn’t cover the other aspects of risk management and initial eating disorder behaviour change work drawn from CBT for Eating Disorders.

““I’m stuck!” can be a common presentation to therapy. It may also emerge mid-therapy with a stall in momentum. This can feel simple to work with in the first instance, and as therapists we might jump to problem-solve or explore how to practically help move the client forward. The trouble being that people often remain feeling stuck, and struggle to make change, despite our best efforts.
This one day workshop explores what it means for our clients to ‘feel stuck’, how to recognise ‘stuckness‘, how it might develop and how to ‘unpack’ what is happening. Using tasks designed to compliment existing clinical practice, this workshop aims to arm practitioners with new tools for working with stuck presentations, encouraging them to ‘lean into’ the experience and support clients to move forward in therapy in productive ways

No, you don’t need previous training or experience in Schema Therapy or Emotion Focused Therapy to attend SPEAKS training. In the SPEAKS Foundations Training we cover the hypothesised change process and teach key tasks to facilitate this, which come from a variety of models but predominantly Emotion Focused Therapy and Schema Therapy. These tasks are taught in sufficient detail, with facilitated skills practice, to give delegates what they need to start using them in practice.
SPEAKS training and bespoke SPEAKS workshops are usually delivered online. Some bespoke SPEAKS workshops can be delivered in person to some services if in the SouthEast of England.
